This structure seeks to change the course of the current visitor’s interaction with the sea fortress and its surroundings. It explores boundary conditions and the difference between the inside and the outside-what is safe and comfortable and what isn’t. It addresses time through materiality, program through structure. Is self-reflection appropriate in public spaces? What is community in private and isolation in public? Open and closed. Interchange between old and new as the new gets older. Mutually dependent on the other for survival, no matter which is the original and which is the addition.
